"The Creation of Contemporary Short Stories as a Means of Evaluating Literary Learning", Ilse Priego
Ilse Priego, High School teacher, presented the virtual lecture "The Creation of Contemporary Short Stories as a Means of Evaluating Literary Learning" as part of the 14th Language Symposium organized by the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. In this presentation, she discussed the work done by our 10th-grade students, who studied the genesis of contemporary short stories in a unit. As part of this, they read excerpts from the short story collection Missing Kissinger by Etgar Keret, "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, and watched a short film based on "The Feather Pillow" by Horacio Quiroga.
Our students analyzed these stories using
printed educational materials designed to assess literary analysis, idea
organization, text production, and language use (Middle Years Programme of the
International Baccalaureate).
Subsequently, for their summative assessment,
they were tasked with creating a short story featuring contemporary aesthetic
characteristics. They had two 50-minute sessions to explicitly include the
following literary elements:
- A conflict to resolve.
- Two main round characters, one or two flat secondary characters, and a background character.
- An active narrator.
- Tone.
- Setting.
- Allegory.
- Irony.
- Literary figures.
Additionally, they had to write a preface
including two textual quotes from the contemporary authors they read (Keret,
Quiroga, or Poe) in a paragraph of 120 to 150 words and present the written
short story of their own creation.

---------------------------
