My experience with community service: Rebe & Isa

Our HS atudents, Rebeca and Isabella, share their experience at CAS project

How did the idea for a creative writing workshop come about?

"While interacting with the children at Escuela de Jurica during our community service, we noticed a great interest and creativity in many of them, but also a certain shyness when it came to expressing themselves in writing. We saw an opportunity to offer a workshop that not only fosters their writing skills but also their confidence and passion for storytelling. We spoke with some teachers, and everyone was very enthusiastic about the idea. So, we decided to organize it as part of our community service project, and so far, it has been a very rewarding experience for all involved."

What positive impact has the workshop had on the academic and personal development of the children and on you?

“The creative writing workshop has had a profoundly positive impact on the children, as well as on us. We have observed how the children have improved their writing skills. Additionally, the workshop has fostered creativity in a safe environment. On the other hand, organizing and leading this workshop has been an opportunity for personal development for us, strengthening our leadership, communication, and empathy skills.”

What advice would you give to someone about to start CAS?

"I would tell them that it's essential to keep an open mind and be receptive to new activities and challenges that may arise during the program. CAS provides the opportunity to positively contribute to the community through service, and it's your decision whether you choose to take advantage of it or not. And don't forget to complete your reflections on time."

What has been one of your greatest challenges?

"One of our biggest challenges at the beginning was connecting with the children and earning their trust. Initially, some children showed shyness or reservations about participating in the creative writing workshop. It was important to find the right way to interact with them, create a welcoming atmosphere, and show them how fun and exciting writing and storytelling can be."

What are you taking away from this experience?

“Although this experience is not yet finished, we have gained very valuable learnings. We have observed how appropriate support can transform the attitude and performance of children, allowing them to develop important skills such as communication and creativity. We are happy to see how children gain confidence in themselves and in their writing abilities.

¿Cómo surgió la idea de un taller de escritura creativa?

“Al interactuar con los niños de la Escuela de Jurica durante nuestro servicio social, notamos un gran interés y creatividad en muchos de ellos, pero también cierta timidez al expresarse por escrito. Vimos la oportunidad de ofrecer un taller que no solo fomente sus habilidades de escritura, sino también su confianza y pasión por contar historias. Hablamos con algunos maestros y todos estuvieron muy entusiasmados con la idea. Así que decidimos organizarlo como parte de nuestro proyecto de servicio social y hasta ahora ha sido una experiencia muy gratificante para todos”

¿Qué impacto positivo ha tenido el taller en el desarrollo académico y personal de los niños y en ustedes?

“El taller de escritura creativa ha tenido un impacto profundamente positivo en los niños, así como en nosotras. Hemos observado cómo los niños han mejorado sus habilidades de escritura. Además, el taller ha fomentado la creatividad en un ambiente seguro. Por otro lado, organizar y liderar este taller ha sido una oportunidad de desarrollo personal para nosotras, fortaleciendo nuestras habilidades de liderazgo, comunicación y empatía.”

¿Qué le dirías a alguien apunto de comenzar CAS?

“Yo les diría que es fundamental mantener la mente abierta y estar receptivos a nuevas actividades y desafíos que puedan surgir durante el programa. CAS ofrece la oportunidad de contribuir positivamente a la comunidad a través del servicio y es tu decisión aprovecharla. Recuerda hacer las reflexiones ya que son el corazón de CAS.”

¿Cuál ha sido uno de sus mayores desafíos?

“Uno de nuestros mayores desafíos al inicio fue conectar con los niños y ganarnos su confianza. Al principio, algunos niños mostraban timidez o reservas al participar en el taller de escritura creativa. Fue importante encontrar la manera adecuada de interactuar con ellos, crear un ambiente acogedor y mostrarles lo divertido y emocionante que puede ser escribir y contar historias.”

¿Qué te llevas de esta experiencia?

“Aunque aún no ha terminado esta experiencia, hemos obtenido aprendizajes muy valiosos. Observamos cómo el apoyo adecuado puede transformar la actitud y el desempeño de los niños, permitiéndoles desarrollar habilidades importantes como la comunicación y la creatividad. Nos alegra ver cómo los niños ganan confianza en sí mismos y en sus habilidades de escritura “
