Erma Anderson, Math Consultant, Returns to JFK
We are excited to announce that Erma Anderson, who visited the JFK campus in May 2023, will be returning for a follow up consultation from May 29-31.
Erma is an internationally recognized
researcher, consultant and expert in math instruction. She has worked with a
number of international schools around the world, as well as her role as a
consultant for Tri-Association and AERO curriculum initiatives.
Erma will attend classes in different sections
in the school and offer feedback to individual and small groups of teachers. As
well, she will provide a workshop for school leaders on the role of leadership
in promoting learning in math. On Friday, during the PD day, Erma will lead a
workshop to demonstrate and analyze best practices in math instruction. The
primary goal is for JFK students to engage, understand, apply and enjoy
mathematics in their daily lives and in preparation for the future.
Erma
states, “Math, at its core, is about solving problems. In order to help students become thoughtful
problem solvers, teachers and parents can help students look for math all
around them, provide them with engaging mathematical phenomena, help them look
for patterns, and to make meaning from what they see.” It is important to stay
positive, allowing children to develop a growth mindset around mathematics.
Problems should be challenging, she stated, in
fact, “if you know the answer to a problem, then it is not a problem.” Thus, we
should encourage students to embrace problems and think flexibly while solving
them, and to look at mistakes along the way as opportunities to grow. Erma
described a rigorous math curriculum as, “conceptual understanding, procedural
fluency, and problem solving.”
